As homeowners along the East Coast brace for Hurricane Irene to come to land this weekend, people are being told to put plywood over all of their windows and brace for what can be the most impactful hurricane to hit the East Coast in many decades. It is a proven fact that if a home has a broken window and the pressure of the storm gets into the house, it has to escape somehow, blowing the roof off of the home and destroying it completely. Stanek Windows, a Cleveland-based window manufacturer, recommends to residents throughout the country ways they can protect their homes.

In the south where hurricanes are very common, the only way homeowners can obtain hurricane insurance on their homes is by having a special kind of impact resistant hurricane glass. One of the makers of this type of window is in Cleveland, Ohio – Stanek Windows. Stanek Windows has a location in Clearwater, Florida where they continually educate homeowners about these types of glass windows.

“On a recent Weather Channel show about destruction that happens during storms, they actually tested this glass and proved that nothing could break the glass, even to the point of taking a speed boat and turning it into a projectile at a house that had these windows,” said Rick Jones, President and CEO of Stanek Windows. “In fact, we will be doing a similar activity tomorrow (Saturday, August 27) at our Clearwater, Florida showroom, located at 11721 U.S. Highway 19. Chris Dingman, the legendary former Tampa Bay Lightning hockey player, will be trying to break Stanek’s glass from 11am-1pm with hockey pucks during the showroom’s Grand Opening. We guarantee he won’t be able to do it.” Also on-site in the showroom will be Steve Jerve, NewsChannel 8′s Chief Meteorologist. He will answer questions about dangerous weather patterns and how to prepare for them.

There are various myths about what to do with windows during an intense storm or hurricane. Stanek Windows advises that homeowners do NOT open windows during the storm. They also advise to be careful about using window film. They have found that it does NOT provide the protection needed from flying debris. Finally, taping windows to prevent debris from entering might keep some of the glass together when impact strikes, but it most likely will not keep it in place.

“By installing these type of windows that protect against high-velocity weather, driving rain, and flying debris, homeowners don’t need to hassle with hurricane shutters or the labor-intensive process of boarding up their windows,” continued Jones.

With high-quality vinyl replacement windows featuring impact-resistance glass, homeowners have lock and leave convenience, insurance discounts, as well as protection from intruders. Additional benefits include energy savings, improved appearance, reduced outside noise, and increased home value.

According to Stanek Windows, their type of impact windows provide eight times the impact resistance and one-eighth of the expansion and contraction of the plasticized vinyl (PVC) traditionally used by many window manufacturers. Using high-performance vinyl, there is no rotting wood, rusty steel or oxidized aluminum. Stanek’s Hurricane/Tornado Impact Windows offer a proprietary installation option called the Stanek Water Management System that provides added protection against water penetration.

It is important that the impact-resistant windows homeowners purchase are Florida Building Commission Approved and have passed the most stringent standards for high-velocity windows, the Miami Dade Large Missile Protocols. This rigorous testing procedure puts windows through demanding wind, water and impact-resistant tests. “Stanek Windows have this approval rating and remain intact when impacted by 2″ x 4″ boards fired out of a cannon at 50 feet per second,” said Jones.

Stanek Windows also recommends not only looking at impact resistant windows, but installation of impact entry doors. Plastpro and Nuema Impact entry doors, in Stanek’s product line, meet hurricane and impact code requirements, provides an incredible defense from environmental extremes and forced entry during hurricanes and violent storms. These doors combine 100% composite jambs, heavy-duty fiberglass door panels, and impact-resistant 1” insulated laminated glass to provide homeowners with a superior defense and reassurance in windstorm and hurricane locations.

Great post! I?m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case
